During this period, she also served as the medical director for NorthStar Anesthesia in Muskogee, Oklahoma, between 2020 and 2023. Dr. Smay’s time with NorthStar Anesthesia stands out as a significant milestone in her career. She regards her achievements there as among her most meaningful professional accomplishments.

Before these leadership roles, Dr. Smay contributed her expertise as a pediatric anesthesiologist at Hillcrest Healthcare System in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from 2019 to 2020. She held the same title at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City between 2017 and 2019 and at St. John Health System in Tulsa from 2014 to 2017. Each of these positions allowed Dr. Smay to refine her clinical skills while providing compassionate care to pediatric patients.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Smay served in the classroom as an assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center from 2012 to 2014, where she played an integral role in educating future anesthesiologists and advancing academic medicine.

Possessing a comprehensive and distinguished educational background, Dr. Smay earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Duke University in 1995 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Illinois in 2007. Subsequently, she completed a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at the University of Illinois in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Years later, Dr. Smay earned a Master of Business Administration in health sector management from Duke University in 2023, equipping her with advanced skills in health care leadership and strategy. She also holds board certification in anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology and completed the Black Corporate Board Readiness Program.

Dr. Smay’s professional affiliations underscore her commitment to advancing the field of anesthesiology.
